About Me

My photo
As a youth art educator, I am self-motivated, dependable with extensive experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds including formal and informal: public schools, museums, community art centers, recreation centers, and camps. I have always had an interest in education and learning through art and in 2010, I pursued my Masters of Science in Art Education at Rochester Institute of Technology and certification to teach in New York State. This intense, lengthy process involved both the classroom and 12 weeks of student teaching. This expanded my philosophy of education and ideas about learning. I believe in curricular integration and lessons plans in art education relating to core subjects. Also, developing research strategies and curriculum planning focusing on projects is an asset of mine. Being an art educator I am always thinking creatively and adapting to new situations and have the ability to take the initiative.

Canadian Art-Self Portrait Lesson

This is a short video that I am going to try out with my 9-12 year old "Focus on Drawing" class. I am planning on introducing the Canadian artist Miller Gore Britian's piece Jennifer. Noting the expressive lines and how they create detail and shape that show emotion. The students will use charcoal, pencil, and conte to draw sad lines, happy lines, excited lines, friendly lines, and anxious lines. Using a pencil have the students draw quickly what they see in the mirror of their face. Then talk about the portrait placement of lips, eyes, noes and ears. Once the students have the basic drawing done, tell them to start adding detail. What is the shape of their eyes? Cat eyes? What is the shape of their mouth? Does it curve up or down? Put on some music as the students draw. Encourage the students to look into the mirror and see the shapes and details. When the students are all finished have them share their experiences in an informal circle setting.
